The company hopes to use OpenAI’s ChatGPT to create a search platform that will challenge Google.
Microsoft is reportedly getting ready to launch a version of its Bing search engine that will leverage the AI behind ChatGPT, according to a report in The Information.
ChatGPT is a creation of San Francisco-based OpenAI, an artificial intelligence startup in which Microsoft invested $1 billion in funding in 2019. The two companies have established a multi-year agreement in order to build artificial intelligence supercomputing technologies on Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing service.
ChatGPT has led some to declare that AI chat will obliterate traditional search engines. Google is said to be in ‘code red’ mode because of the technology.
A recent report in The Information cited two people with direct knowledge of the plans who say that Microsoft intends to compete with Alphabet-owned search engine Google. In fact, an older version of GPT is already used by Bing for automatic search query suggestions.
Moreover, Microsoft announced in a 2022 blog post that it plans to integrate OpenAI image generation model DALL-E 2 into Bing Image Creator, allowing users to use a descriptive text prompt to generate AI artwork.
A new way to search
Instead of using Google’s Featured Snippet approach of quoting a source that addresses what the user is querying, Bing’s AI-powered results could take the form of a full sentence that includes the source of the information or a list of links.
The sources, however, say that “Bing will still rely on its own technology to produce the most search results”, as GPT isn’t intended to “continuously scrape the web or provide real-time information like a search engine does”. That said, it remains to be seen how Bing will ensure the accuracy of its answers.
