New Windows 10 update causes restart problems

The new updates to Microsoft’s operating system again prevent Windows 10 computers from restarting.

The previous problem concerned only users with certain antivirus solutions. This time it affects everyone who wants to restore their computer to a point for the latest Windows 10-update, according to Bleeping Computer.

Microsoft confirms that the computer may indeed experience a stop error (0xc000021a) under these circumstances. The computer restarts, but the system cannot return to the Windows desktop.

In short: the computer crashes due to a Windows 10 update that is designed to protect the system from possible damage. It can be considered a serious problem, as the patches also fix numerous other security problems every month.

System Recovery Process

The problem would be with the system recovery process. During this process, Windows temporarily restores files that are in use. It then stores the information in the register. When the computer restarts, the recovery will be completed. At least, that’s what should happen.

While restoring to a restore point before the update, Windows restores the catalog files and prepares the drivers’ .sys files for recovery after the system restarts. However, when the computer restarts, the existing drivers are loaded before the more recent versions are restored. Because the driver versions do not match the recovered catalog files, the recovery process stops.

Solution

Users can solve the problem themselves by following these steps:

• Reboot the computer after the failed system restore to open the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).
• In the WinRE window: Troubleshoot > Advanced options > More recovery options > Startup settings and then click Restart now.
• Make sure that Disable driver signature enforcement is selected in the boot settings.

The boot process is now continuing and the system recovery should eventually be resumed and completed.
