Samsung revealed their latest smartphones last night. The Galaxy S20 series has been presented and the line-up does not consist of two but three phones this year. The innovation at Samsung comes mainly from the camera this year.

The South Korean company presented not two, but three devices this year. Namely, the Samsung Galaxy S20, the Samung Galaxy S20 Plus and the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. The differences with the previous generation are minimal, Samsung has mainly innovated with the camera and some specifications are improved. For example, it is now also possible to charge wirelessly faster, and it is possible to record videos in 8K instead of 4K. This is mostly useful for the chosen few who already have an 8K television.

Galaxy S20 camera and optical zoom

The most important innovation is, as mentioned, the camera and the possibility of optical zooming. With the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20 Plus, an optical lens of 64 megapixels makes it possible to zoom optically up to 3 times without loss of quality. The devices can zoom up to 30x digitally, but Samsung tries to limit the loss of quality as much as possible using AI algorithms.

The cameras in the device have 12 megapixels, one has a normal lens and the other an ultra-wide lens. On paper, these look like the same cameras as in the Galaxy S10, so the most important difference is the optical lens.

Samsung Galaxy S20 vs Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus

If we look at the Samsung Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20 Plus as a whole, the number of differences can be counted on 1 hand. The screen is a bit larger of the S20 Plus, not 6.2 inches but 6.7 inches. The battery capacity is larger, 4000 mAh versus 4500 mAh. Finally, the Galaxy S20 Plus has a so-called ToF-sensor (time of flight), with which the depth can be determined when taking a picture up to a distance of 2 meters, so the exposure can be controlled better.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra

Finally, there is the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, which is again slightly larger at 6.9 inches. Additionally, this camera can zoom in even further: 100x digital zoom. The battery capacity has also been increased to 5000 mAh, and the working memory is not 12, but 16GB. The number of megapixels of the cameras has also been further increased to make that zoom capacity possible. The optical lens gets 48 megapixels and the standard camera even has 108 megapixels.

However, Samsung has developed a special technology that makes use of non-binning. What it comes down to is that a pixel normally consists of 4 subpixels, which Samsung has now increased to 9 subpixels, so that more light can be captured per pixel. This changes a 108 megapixel photo into a 12 megapixel photo, but the file size remains acceptable.

5G technology

The Samsung Galaxy S20 appears in a 4G and 5G variant, the Galaxy S20 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra will be equipped with 5G technology as a standard. This will ensure that the devices are prepared for the future. We are of course still waiting for the first 5G networks to become available.

The recommended retail prices of the devices are:
