Google has made great strides forward in recent years with its Pixel smartphones. The company does not seem to be able to continue on this path, based on recent information, Google expects lower sales figures for the new devices.
Japanese Nikkei has found out how many devices Google expects to sell this year of its new Pixel 4a and Pixel 5 smartphones. For example, Google has ordered less than 1 million units of the Pixel 5 for the rest of this year. The new flagship will therefore certainly not break any sales records.
The exact number is not clear but it seems to be around 800,000. That’s not much for a flagship with a 5G modem. The device has been available in a number of European countries since September, 30th.
In addition to the Pixel 4a and Pixel 5, a Pixel 4a with 5G will soon be available. Google seems to have higher expectations of that device since it’s lower priced than the Pixel 5.
In total, Google expects to sell 3 million copies of these three devices. Where the Pixel 4a without 5G will probably sell the most. That is also the most affordable smartphone.
Sales figures Pixel
Last year, Google sold 7.2 million Pixel smartphones. An increase of roughly 50 percent from 2018, when only 4.7 million Pixel smartphones were sold. In the first six months of 2020, Google sold just 1.5 million smartphones. Which is a huge drop. So it looks like in 2020, Google will once again be around the sales figures of 2018. The reason for this decline is that the high-end Pixel 4 smartphones were very poorly received. The devices didn’t impress users that much, even in the reviews, the devices did not always come off well. Google itself dedicates the bad sales figures mainly to the coronavirus.
If it wants to achieve the same sales figures this year as in 2018, it will have to sell the three million units of the Pixel 4a and Pixel 5. Last summer, Google held a bargain sale for the Pixel 3a smartphone in many countries at a very competitive price. That sale will undoubtedly have helped the sales figures a bit.
The Pixel 3a was also the main reason for the higher sales figures in 2019. It was the first cheaper Pixel smartphone. Google had found a perfect mix of good performance at an attractive price tag with the Pixel 3a. That balance is very hard to find, also the new Pixel 4a cannot compare to the Pixel 3a at that time.
