Lenovo is venturing into the Large Format Displays market by announcing the upcoming launch of three large displays for conference rooms.

The ThinkVision T86, T75 and T65 will appear in June 2022. A first. Never before has Lenovo offered displays for conference rooms and classrooms. With the so-called Large Format Displays, the manufacturer enters the playing field of products such as the Microsoft Surface Hub 2S, ViewSonic ViewBoard and Sony Bravia. A strategic move.

The ThinkVision T86, T75 and T65 are largely equal. All three models have a microphone, 4K resolution and 4K webcam. Display size is the difference. Sizes correspond to the names of the models. The T86 sports 86 inch, the T75 75 inch and the latter 65 inch.

A notable choice

While audio and video quality promises to be adequate, that’s just as true for products from other manufacturers. A more critical difference among Large Format Displays is the integrated computing power and operating system.

Most modern LFDs are equipped with an operating system to function without external devices such as laptops. ViewSonic integrates Viewboard OS into various designs. Microsoft opts for Windows in the Surface Hub 2S.

In both cases, users are able to run apps — for example, for video conferencing — on the LFD. App availability depends on the operating system and computing power. In this light, Lenovo’s design is noteworthy. All three introductions run on Android, 4GB RAM and 65GB Flash memory. Android in a LFD is not unique, but rare enough to argue that Lenovo is filling a gap in market supply.

While integrated chips and operating systems benefit LFD accessibility, all suppliers will continue to allow connections to external devices for the foreseeable future. Like the alternatives, Lenovo includes ports for USB Type-C, USB 3.0, HDMI, DisplayPort and Ethernet. When connecting a Windows laptop — or any other device — to a Lenovo LFD, most of the integrated OS and computing power is bypassed. Resultingly, the experience is highly similar to using an external device in conjunction with models from the manufacturers mentioned above.
