The new feature addition aims to make it much easier for people to log into a video call.

Microsoft is adding the ability to join a meeting via a unique meeting Numeric “code”. When the feature rolls out, all meetings will have a Meeting ID that is automatically assigned to a Microsoft Teams user. The ID will alsop appear in the meeting invite under the meeting link. Meeting attendees can join the meeting by entering the Meeting ID.

Making meetings easier

The feature will make it easier to share invites across social media and other forms of communication e.g. voice calls. Such functionality is already popular among Teams competitors such as Zoom and WebEx. Join codes are often used when someone wants to join a meeting but the host cannot easily share the join link with them.

For example, a meeting host could invite people via SMS. A problem could arise when some people have trouble getting the SMS over to their computer. A simple numeric code avoids that hassle.

Even more simple: meeting hosts could give people the codes over the phone. Once a user has the code, they can simply type it into the Teams client to join.

The new Meeting ID feature will be available in the web, desktop and mobile clients starting in early May and is expected to complete by late May 2021.
