The May 2020 update of Windows 10, also called version 2004, has been rolled out for developers in the Microsoft Developer Network. The update (build 19041) will probably not be available for regular consumers until the end of this month.
Microsoft has been rolling out larger updates to OEMs first for a long time, followed by developers and finally to the consumers. Usually, a few weeks pass between these phases, in the case of the 2004 version of Windows 10, there was only a week between the rollout for OEMs and developers. The expected rollout date for consumers is May 28th.
With the new version, several bugs will be fixed along with the introduction of a number of features. Among other things, support for Windows subsystems for Linux 2 and the ability to create Host Apps are included in the feature releases. The latter makes it possible to designate an app as a host but to be able to run components independently of it. In addition, it will also be possible to download setup files from the cloud instead of only using a local installer.
Finally, the existing feature of automatically reopening certain apps after a restart of the computer will be extended, giving more applications the option to be restored.
Simultaneously with the rollout of Windows 10 2004, a series of new features have already been presented to several beta testers in the Windows Insider Program. These will be rolled out in a smaller, additional update although it is not yet clear whether all these features will be included in the final product.
