Microsoft is demanding a say in OpenAI’s leadership. The AI developer is given a list of demands so that sudden, sweeping decisions cannot reoccur.
Microsoft is now demanding some changes with OpenAI in return for being a loyal partner during the AI developers crisis. At least that’s what some involved tell Bloomberg. The tech giant would like to see changes to its board of directors and more involvement in major decisions.
Selecting on experience
With the return of Sam Altman as CEO at OpenAI, three new board members were immediately proposed. They are Bret Taylor, former co-CEO of Salesforce, Larry Summers, former U.S. Treasury Secretary, and Adam D’Angelo, founder of knowledge platform Quora.
Microsoft, however, wants to see more changes to the board of directors. The board should consist of more members, and the required experience level to get a seat should be raised, the tech giant says.
Having a say in merger
Furthermore, the company demands to be informed about merger plans on forehand. Rumours of negotiations between OpenAI and Anthropic will have led to this idea. The merger was allegedly proposed by OpenAI, but Dario Amodei, Anthropic CEO, refused the idea.
The return of Altman and Greg Brockman to OpenAI does receive the full support of Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft. This is evident from his post on social media platform X: “Sam, Greg, and I have sat down together and agreed that they both have key roles to take on the OpenAI leadership team to ensure OpenAI continues to thrive and build on its mission.”
