ChatGPT now available without an account

OpenAI now makes the basic version of ChatGPT accessible to everyone without creating an account. However, this version is more limited in functionality than with an account.

The basic version of ChatGPT, which runs on OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 model, now allows anyone direct access without creating an account. The reason for fully opening up ChatGPT is that the AI giant aims “to make AI accessible to anyone curious about its capabilities.”

Restrictions

The fully open version offers less functionality than with a (free) account. For example, OpenAI has taken additional security measures for this version, including blocking prompts and generating responses for multiple categories. The categories of these are not specified.

In addition, users without an account cannot save their chat history and voice conversations for later use. They can also not use their instructions, which allows them to control how ChatGPT answers their questions or have the chat tool remember basic information for use during different chat sessions.

These options are limited to using the basic version of ChatGPT with an account. Of course, the GPT-4 version of the GenAI tool is still only available for payment through end-user accounts.

OpenAI is gradually rolling out the public version of ChatGPT. The editors’ test shows that it is not yet possible to use ChatGPT without an account in the Netherlands.
