Informatica aims to improve the traceability of data lineage with a data catalog powered by artificial intelligence (AI). A number of other updates to the Intelligent Data Platform have also been announced.

The company’s Intelligent Data Platform will be updated with data lineage tracking tools, catalog information across ecosystems, and improved customer records through automation and AI.

The new “Catalog of Catalogs” stands out because the company is trying to track data lineage across IT environments. For example, the Catalog includes metadata scanners for business intelligence, data warehouses, big data and third-party repositories. There is also profiling for Spark, and using machine learning, relationships can be found between datasets and business units. Informatica’s intention is for AI to be able to scale productivity and data management more effectively.

“AI and machine learning play a crucial role in scaling up data management. You can’t solve the current data management challenges simply by involving more engineers and developers in the problem. (…) You need AI to automate and simplify data management tasks,” said Amit Walia, president of products & marketing at Informatica, about the significance of AI.

More updates

A number of other additions include a data marketplace within Informatica Axon Data Governance. This is to enable access to managed enterprise data. Automation should make datasets easier to find, with clarity about the source, quality, sensitivity, and access rights of the data. Data categorisation tools have also been added.

In addition, data quality for hybrid mapping of data has been improved, app integration has been added, as well as API management, Spark processing, and data ingestion, cleaning, profiling, verification, and integration. There is also support for the latest Spark engine for AWS and Microsoft Azure, and support for data engineering use cases. Finally, customer data automation tools have been added to improve records, personalise and add reports and analyses for customer segments.
