Amazon is making available S3 Express One Zone, which the company describes as a high performance storage class.

AWS’ widely used object storage service should get a big performance boost and lower latency with the new storage class. S3 Express One Zone would come into its own especially for demanding workloads. In applications that require access to large amounts of small files, reading the small objects would be up to 10 times faster than the standard implementation of S3. This is mainly because of its very low latency.

With S3, data is stored in buckets (repositories). The new storage class S3 Express One Zone is said to be an advancement because it can handle hundreds of thousands of data requests per second. These requests would complete the service with a latency of a few milliseconds. In theory, so little that it is probably not even observable.

“This new storage class can handle objects of any size, but is especially awesome for smaller objects. This is because for smaller objects the time to first byte is very close to the time for last byte. In all storage systems, larger objects take longer to stream because there is more data to download during the transfer, and therefore the storage latency has less impact on the total time to read the object,” explained Chief Evangelist Jeff Barr.

Another benefit AWS wants to realize with S3 Express One Zone is cost reduction. With the new storage class, the cost of requests is 50 percent lower than with the standard S3 version. This also allows AWS computing resources to be used more efficiently and potentially shut down faster. Overall processing costs thus decrease significantly, according to Amazon.

AI projects

A logical use case for S3 Express One Zone, then, is training AI models. According to Amazon, S3 Express One Zone supports building large models perfectly by being able to support millions of access requests to datasets per minute. Other analytics projects are also conceivable use cases, as well as enabling personalized ads.

Currently, S3 Express One Zone is available in the cloud regions of Northern Virginia, Oregon, Stockholm and Tokyo. At a charger time, the storage class should be available from other locations.
