Kubernetes adoption is raising cloud costs even more than before for most organisations. More employees should be aware of their expenses, respondents to a survey by the CNCF claim.

Nearly half (49 percent) of respondents say they are spending more money on cloud services since adopting Kubernetes. In fact, 17 percent of them state that these costs have increased significantly. Half of the organizations in question would spend up to a quarter of their total budget on Kubernetes, for 28 percent it is half, for 10 percent even three-quarters and, according to 5 percent, Kubernetes is even claiming the entire budget. It contradicts a familiar perception that Kubernetes should actually lead to cost savings. In a general sense, this representation is also present in cloud adoption in a general sense, as we described earlier.

Tip: Cloud spending soars: how to reduce costs?

Cloud costs vary widely

CNCF data show that cloud costs vary widely. For example, 21 percent spend less than $10,000 per month, 26 percent spend between $10,000 and $50,000 and 22 percent pay more than a million on a monthly basis. The number of nodes for all Kubernetes clusters also varies significantly, although nearly half (49 percent) have between 1 and 50 running.

Organizations say they are overspending, and attribute this to several factors. Overprovisioning, such as using more resources than needed for a workload, comes in at a clear number one, with 70 percent endorsing it as a major factor. This is followed by a lack of awareness about costs among individuals and teams (45 percent), inefficiencies such as not turning off resources in a timely manner (43 percent), a lack of optimization for cloud scalability (43 percent) and too little visibility into consumption (40 percent).

No visibility

A striking 38 percent of respondents have no monitoring of Kubernetes costs at all, while 40 percent rely only on estimates. Those who do use it mostly choose the tools that fit the cloud platform on which they operate.

More visibility will make the cost picture more attractive, respondents believe. Those who are aware of the costs involved will be more disciplined with the budget, they believe.
