Google CEO Sundar Pichai: “new layoffs are coming”

In an internal memo, Google CEO Sundar Pichai warns his employees that there will be more rounds of layoffs this year. Google says it wants to invest in certain key priorities, and that involves tough decisions, writes The Verge.

According to The Verge, Pichai announced in an internal memo to employees that more jobs will be cut next year due to other priorities. What these priorities are, the Google CEO did not mention.

Difficult decisions

This new strategy means the tech giant will have to make “tough decisions” elsewhere to create capacity. Specifically, that means implementing employee reductions.

The layoffs are taking place to remove “layers to simplify execution and drive velocity in some areas,” Pichai said in his memo.

Layoffs throughout 2024

Since Jan. 10, Google has already laid off thousands of people in various parts of the company. The Google hardware division, ad sales, search, shopping, Google Maps, policy, core engineering and YouTube have been particularly affected.

The additional layoffs now more or less announced will not be on the scale of the reductions that took place at Google early last year, Sundar Pichai indicates in memo. In January 2023, Google laid off as many as 12,000 employees.

Not every team will be affected, but the cuts are going to impact all employees. The layoffs, many of which have already been announced, will also occur throughout the rest of the year, the Google CEO’s memo states.

Google has not yet commented on The Verge’s post.
