Google will inform users when their accounts are under attack

Google will inform users when their accounts are under attack

Google is on track to release alert features that users can deploy to be notified quicker if their accounts are suspected of being under attack or breached. The features were announced on Wednesday in conjunction with other privacy additions.

Google has security systems designed to look for activity that is deemed suspicious in Google Accounts. When the systems flag a potential hack, the users affected will get an email or mobile alert.

The new features will tell users directly inside Google Services that they are using. For instance, when using Gmail, a person will see an information box on the email interface, letting them know that they may be compromised.

Pioneering security

Helping users beware of breaches sooner gives the hacker less time to continue breaching other connected accounts or downloading personal files. The exact time frame that in-app security alerts have will vary.

However, according to Rahul Roy-Chowdhury, a Google exec, the number of people who saw notifications via Android within an hour increased by a factor of 20.

Considering that Google has billions of global users, even small improvements can make things better. Safe Browsing, for instance, protects more than 4 billion devices, Gmail blocks more than 100 million phishing attempts every day, and Google Play Protect can scan over 100 billion apps daily for malware or any other security issues.

Apple comes first

The in-app security alerts will first roll out on iOS in the coming weeks. Availability on other platforms will start next year. Google is pairing security enhancement with new privacy-oriented features.

Google’s security investments have given rise to some tech innovations. The company invented federated learning to train machine learning models on user data without sending the data to the cloud for processing.

The feature is now used in other things like malware detection.
