Akamai has announced an update to its popular App & API Protector platform. The company promises to raise the availability of mission-critical URLs, APIs and microservices more than ever.

Akamai is making extensive use of AI for some of the additions. For example, applications are better protected against short-lived DDoS attacks with the new update through machine learning. Various data points, such as a client’s reputation score help prioritize traffic, which ensures that the most important activities remain available.

Security

Another security enhancement is CVE Protection Catalog, which lets security teams focus on key vulnerabilities based on CVE scores. It should however be said that the score alone does not necessarily say everything about the genuine risk associated with a vulnerability, although Akamai itself also offers insights into this on top of the CVE details.

Tip: When is a critical vulnerability actually dangerous?

Browser Impersonation Detection is a new tool within App & API Protector that too uses machine learning, specifically to detect whether malicious bots are active. Akamai promises that the tool will pick up very few false positives among them.

As a final security addition, the company touts Advanced SOCC Services, a capability to get personalized support through Akamai’s Security Operations Command Center (SOCC).

Faster launch

Other enhancements focus on simplification. For example, Akamai is now making application onboarding easier. Simple Start Onboard allows users to get an application working with “just a few clicks.”

Innovations to the existing Web Security Analytics provide greater visibility into web performance. These include customizable dashboards, alerts when configuration changes, webhook alerts, and shortened deep links to simplify content sharing.

Client-Side Protection & Compliance additionally gives organizations extra help to comply with industry standards and legal regulations.
