OpenAI has launched a ChatGPT app for macOS. The app offers Apple users instant access to the AI assistant’s LLMs and functionalities.
The app was previously available only to a limited number of users of the paid ChatGPT Plus subscription. Now, Mac users can converse directly with the chatbot through the app, asking questions or performing commands for certain tasks. They no longer need to go to a browser to perform these actions via the website.
Users can easily activate sessions with shortcuts. These shortcuts open a text box where users can start their session with ChatGPT.
The application lets users choose between OpenAI’s different LLMs: GPT-3.5, GPT-4, and the most recent and advanced GPT-4. It also supports other, more specific LLMs from OpenAI, such as DALL-E, for image generation.
Missing support
However, the app for macOS does not support OpenAI’s official API. Furthermore, the controversial advanced voice mode, which allows users to interact with the chatbot using voices, has not yet been activated. OpenAI has indicated that some time is still needed to get this feature working properly.
This app’s introduction is separate from the previously announced closer collaboration with Apple, which includes integrating ChatGPT into Siri to answer more complex questions. In addition, OpenAI’s technology will also get more space within iOS, iPadOS, and macOS itself.
The ChatGPT app for macOS can now be downloaded directly from OpenAI’s website but not yet from the Mac App Store. Mac laptops and PCs must be running at least macOS Sonoma or higher and have an Apple M1 processor. The dedicated ChatGPT application for Windows is expected later this year.
