Box Agent now generally available for enterprise content

Box has made the Box Agent generally available today for Enterprise Plus and Enterprise Advanced customers. The AI-powered capability takes natural language instructions to autonomously search, analyze, and generate content from enterprise files. The tool leverages models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, existing within Box’s existing security and permissions framework.

The Box Agent capability acts as a unified AI engine across the platform. It applies advanced reasoning models to unstructured enterprise data. It can search company files, synthesize information, and generate documents without needing user tweaking in their existing Box environment.

“Enterprises everywhere are looking to harness AI to transform their businesses, but AI can only reach its full potential if it understands the unique context of an organization,” said Aaron Levie, co-founder and CEO of Box. That context, he argues, lives in contracts, research materials, and financial documents.

Multi-step tasks and use cases

The agent handles complex, multi-step tasks in a single flow. It interprets natural language queries, locates relevant files, extracts key data, and produces structured outputs without manual intervention. Supported output formats include Box Notes, Word docs, PDFs, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint decks.

Use cases span multiple departments. Legal teams can compare contracts against standard playbooks, procurement can process invoices at scale, and sales engineers can automate RFP responses. Marketing teams can draft on-brand assets by pointing the agent to existing brand guidelines.

The Box Agent is permissions-aware by design, the company says. It only accesses files the user is authorized to see and never uses customer data to train third-party large language models. Models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google power the underlying reasoning.

This announcement extends Box’s AI agent strategy, which it has been working on for a while. In September, for example, Box introduced Box Extract, Box Automate, and enhanced Box Apps, agentic tools for data extraction, workflow orchestration, and intelligent dashboards, available to Enterprise Advanced subscribers.

Availability and Box AI Studio

Box AI Studio also receives enhancements today. Admins can now configure custom agents tailored to specific business rules and data sets, enabling repeatable workflows to run with consistency across the organization.

The Box Agent is available now on Enterprise Plus and Enterprise Advanced plans. File creation in Office formats remains in beta for Enterprise Advanced. That tier also unlocks Pro Mode for advanced reasoning, and Expanded Mode for processing large content volumes in a single prompt.
