Microsoft launched an SQL Server 2022 Release Candidate (RC) for Linux. The version offers support for Azure-related issues and the same functionality as the recent SQL Server 2022 RC for Windows.
The SQL Server 2022 RC for Linux follows the recent release of Microsoft’s SQL Server 2022 RC for Windows. The Linux variant supports Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and Canonical Ubuntu.
The SQL Server 2022 RC for Linux offers the same functionality as the RC for Windows. For example, the Query Store feature allows users to monitor system performance by storing a history of queries and runtime statistics.
Azure functionality
The SQL Server 2022 RC for Linux also includes support for Azure Synapse Link. This allows developers to use Azure Synapse Analytics for quick and direct access to the Azure Cosmos DB analytics store.
Furthermore, the release partly supports Azure Active Directory authentication. Microsoft emphasized that SQL Server containers don’t support the latter functionality yet.
Open-source databases are increasingly popular
Multiple studies indicate that the use of open-source databases is increasingly popular. According to The Register, Microsoft might therefore continue to invest in new versions of SQL Server 2022 and integrations into its Azure public cloud.
