PCIe 6.0 is expected to deliver a record-breaking performance for big data applications. The I/O has just been finalized and assessed to have a data rate of up to 64 GT/s.

The Peripheral Component Interconnect Special Interest Group (PCI-SIG) has rolled out the details regarding its most updated PCIe 6.0. The model has delivered data transfer rates of up to 64 GTs per second per lane. This technology will play an integral role in providing scalable, economical, and interconnected solutions to operate data-based applications and workloads.

Features of PCIe 6.0

PCI-SIG promulgated the release of PCIe 6.0 three years well after its predecessor (PCIe 5.0) was released. The new and improved version has several new features and some properties carried by its previous versions. PCIe 6.0 comes with a bandwidth and power efficiency that is twice as large as its previous version (PCIe 5.0). However, the new version has removed the high latency and bandwidth overhead, making it cost-effective.

The new version has also introduced Forward Error Correction (FEC) and Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) abilities to reduce the error rate. PCIe 6.0 also features pulse amplitude modulation with 4 (PAM4) signaling levels. This model extends compatibility with the older versions of PCIe. That said, the reference clock architecture and support for SRNS and SRIS clocking modes have remained unchanged for this new model.

PCIe 6.0 version also enables Flow Control Unit (Flit)-based encoding, optimizing bandwidth, functionality, and processing.
