Recently, the latest new annual release, version 8.3, of the PHP programming language was released. This release again brings a lot of new functionality. According to surveys, PHP still remains one of the most popular programming languages.

In the new release PHP 8.3 has again introduced a large amount of new functionality. Among other things, the programming language has now received a so-called #[Override] attribute feature.

This functionality verifies that a method marked with this attribute really has a parent method that has been overridden. This protects against typos or refactoring where a parent method is deleted. Now this sometimes results in fatal errors.

Other features

In addition, PHP 8.3 has also gained ‘typed class constants’. This improves PHP’s dynamic programming functionality. Also, the latest release now features ‘Json_validate() function.’ This functionality checks if a string is validated JSON code. This is more efficient than the feature than json_decode().

Furthermore, the functionality ‘deep cloning of read-only properties’ has been added. With this, PHP aims to solve a hitherto missing feature in the programming language’s support for read-only properties.

JetBrains now supports the 8.3 version of PHP and has released a new release of its PhpStorm IDE for that purpose.

Research shows that although PHP usage is slowly declining, the programming language is still popular for use by Web sites. About 76 percent of websites whose server-side programming language is known still use PHP. For example, PHP is widely used by the popular CMS WordPress that runs on 43 percent of all websites.
