Rising energy costs will almost certainly cause European telecom carriers to postpone plans for 5G deployments, the president of Vodafone Italy’s operations said in a statement on Friday.

“To pay energy bills, I don’t see other solutions but to postpone investments”, Vodafone Italy’s Aldo Bisio remarked at an industry gathering.

Europe lags behind the United States and Asia in deploying fifth-generation mobile networks. Bisio cautioned that increased energy costs would cause investment to be delayed, widening the disparity even further.

Last month, Ericsson and Vodafone launched a pre-emptive support service for private 5G networks with machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) to keep operations running efficiently at a Foxconn factory in Hungary. Foxconn depends on non-fixed 5G-based test vehicles to test newly produced PCs before packing at its Hungary factory.

The two companies collaborated to develop the Service Continuity for Private Networks solution, a one-of-a-kind support service for 5G networks that can be customized to fit the needs of Vodafone enterprise customers like Foxconn, one of the world’s largest electronics manufacturers and technology providers.

Service Continuity for Private Networks

To ensure that the private network connecting these test cars is as reliable as possible, Vodafone and Ericsson collaborated on developing and deploying the custom-built Service Continuity.

Private networks from Ericsson are replacing traditional wired industrial networks, providing organizations like Foxconn with highly versatile, secure, and wireless connectivity that changes core business-critical activities. Once the network is operational, the intelligent, proactive Service Continuity solution provides flexibility and smooth operations.

Network disruptions in industrial environments such as Foxconn’s can shut down production, and the solution reduces the possibility of expensive downtime by preemptively recognizing and mitigating outages.
