The McAfee Enterprise report shows ransomware is gaining ground even as the hacking landscape changes.

According to a new report from McAfee Enterprise, ransomware continues to hold cybersecurity headlines hostage, even though much has changed since their last threat report.

The company’s “Advanced Threat Research Report: October 2021” examined cybercriminal activity related to ransomware and cloud threats in the second quarter of 2021. It found that amid the shift to remote working, cybercriminals introduced new and updated threats and tactics. They mounted these in campaigns targeting prominent sectors, such as government, financial services and entertainment.

McAfee itself has also changed

The security company has made some internal changes that refledct the prevalence of ransomware in businesses worldwide. McAfee’s Advanced Threat Research team moved away from McAfee Labs to McAfee Enterprise, a newly dedicated Enterprise Cybersecurity company.

Raj Samani, McAfee’s Chief Scientist for Enterprise, explained the changes going on in a blog post. “We’ve shifted the primary focus of our new Threat Report from frequency to prevalence,” he said.

“Our team is now paying attention to how often we see the threat around the globe and, more importantly, who it targets.” While DarkSide attempted to step out of the spotlight, other ransomware families including REvil/Sodinokibi, Ryuk, and Babuk “wreaked havoc from among DarkSide’s shadow,” Samani explains.

In response, McAfee’s new threat report offers a deep dive into ransomware’s increasing prevalence. This includes ransomware family detections and the delta of data between open-source intelligence and telemetry.

Thew McAfee Enterprise team also offers research and analysis on relevant threat topics . For example, they cover cloud threats that continue threat trends targeting a remote workforce. They also uncover healthcare vulnerabilities in a globally used infusion pump.

They also identify MITRE ATT&CK Techniques as the top techniques used in Q2 2021.

The report also provides resources designed to help enterprises defend themselves from the latest threats.
