Colosseum Dental Benelux has decided to pay ransom to the cybercriminals that attacked the Dutch dental organization last week. The amount paid is unknown. 120 of its dental practices closed shop late last week.

The dental organization announced it saw no other way out but to pay. “The care of our patients is our top priority and prompted Colosseum Dental to contact the cyber attackers and make arrangements for the return and security of our data”, the organization said in a Dutch statement. “This was the only way we could minimize the risk to all involved at this short notice and restore practice operations relatively quickly.”

No transparency yet

The dental organization remains vague about the proceedings of the attack. According to Colosseum Dental Benelux, further investigation is required before additional updates are given. Anonymous sources told Dutch media cybercriminals deleted backups before encrypting systems. Threats to publish the stolen data were made. In the meantime, the dental organization filed a report with the police. The attack was also reported to the Dutch privacy authority.
