Recent Windows 10 update causes problems during bluetooth connection

Microsoft has rolled out a new Windows 10 update (KB4503293) that causes errors. One of the security improvements in the update may cause problems when setting up a Bluetooth connection, as Windows Latest discovered.

Microsoft has published a new support document, announcing that outdated Bluetooth devices may fail due to the latest update of their operating system. This means that problems can be experienced when users connect their Windows 10 computer or pair with an outdated Bluetooth device.

“You may experience problems when pairing, connecting or using certain Bluetooth devices after installing security updates that appeared on 11 June 2019”, Microsoft explains in the document. “These security updates address a vulnerability by deliberately preventing connections to insecure Bluetooth devices. Any device that uses known keys to encrypt connections may be affected,” including certain security systems.

The change applies to all versions of Windows 10, including the May 2019 Update and Windows 10 version 1507. The problem also applies to Windows 8.1. Windows 7 is not affected by this. It is not clear how many devices have been affected by the update. However, only a small number of devices would be involved. Microsoft advises all users to install updates for Bluetooth devices if they experience connection problems.

Other updates

This month’s update comes with a short list of solutions. The Patch Tuesday update fixes security flaws in the operating system and other first-party apps, such as Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer and other components such as the Windows Kernel.

The update can be downloaded and installed by checking for updates in the Settings app. The update can also be temporarily postponed via the advanced settings page. The update brings the Windows 10 May 2019 Update to build 18362.175. The October 2018 Update goes to Build 17763.557.
