Red Hat unveils new logo after twenty years

Red Hat unveils new logo after twenty years

Red Hat has decided to drop its legendary Shadowman logo after almost twenty years, in exchange for a new version. The software company has unveiled a new logo.

The new logo, now only the ‘red hat’, suggests that Red Hat wants to refresh his image now that it is almost starting a new part of its journey, reports Silicon Angle. The company was acquired by IBM for 34 billion dollars last year. In January, the shareholders gave the green light for the acquisition.

According to executive vice president of corporate marketing Tim Yeaton of Red Hat there is another reason than the acquisition for the change. According to Yeaton, people didn’t know what the old ‘Shadowman’ was supposed to represent. It’s supposed to be a heroic spy, but according to the company’s research, people thought it was “secretive, sinister or suspicious”.

Open Brand Project

“The brand name and I were deeply saddened,” said Yeaton. “And so the company started the “Open Brand Project”, opening up the design of the new logo open source to its employees. That led to the “Tattoo Team”, a committee of employees who had the old logo as a tattoo. They were given the task of making a new design.

The new logo should mark the company’s evolution from a “scrappy startup that “enters” data centers with packaged copies of a Linux-based operating system, to the leading provider of open source solutions for enterprise hybrid cloud environments,” said Yeaton. “With the new logo, we’ve really stepped out of the shadows.”
