OpenAI introduces the Read Aloud update for ChatGPT, a GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 feature that reads responses aloud.

The reading is done in the same language a user chats with ChatGPT. Read Aloud supports a total of 37 languages, including Dutch. Users can also choose from five voices to read the response aloud. While testing the feature on Android, Techzine heard a female voice by default.

Operation

This feature is handy for users who submit questions to ChatGPT on the go. For them, using the smartphone hands-free is desired in certain situations. The feature will first be launched on iOS and Android.

On smartphones, users must hold down the response for a bit longer, after which a pop-up menu will appear where they can select Read Aloud.

In September, OpenAI made it possible to use your voice to ask ChatGPT a question, with the response appearing in written text. Now, users also get a spoken response from ChatGPT. The chatbot also detects the user’s language, after which it responds in the same language. This is not yet error-free, as we got a German “Guten Morgen” when we say “Good morning” in Dutch.

The Read Aloud feature is also currently being implemented in the web app. A Read Aloud button will appear below a message if a user has the new feature.
