Microsoft reminds administrators that Windows Server 2022 will reach the end of mainstream support on October 13, 2026. The security update released that month will be the last in that phase. It will then enter extended support, with free monthly security updates through October 14, 2031.
This announcement comes exactly thirty days in advance. Windows Server 2022 will continue to receive updates after October 13, 2026, but only security updates. New features and non-security fixes will no longer be provided. According to the Fixed Lifecycle Policy, Microsoft will not charge any additional fees for this.
Microsoft explicitly mentions one exception: hotpatch support for Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition will continue through October 2027. Systems enrolled in this program will continue to receive monthly security updates without requiring a reboot.
Adoption of Windows Server 2025 is off to a slow start
Windows Server 2025 is the most recent LTSC release and, according to the lifecycle page, will remain in mainstream support through October 9, 2029, with extended support through October 2034.
A survey of SMBs found that 1.5 percent had migrated and 4.4 percent were migrating or validating. More than half indicated they were still considering the move.
Microsoft advises organizations to evaluate upgrade options and start deployment testing early. A free 180-day trial is available through the Microsoft Evaluation Center.
