Oracle is now making the Autonomous Database solution available within its on-premise Oracle Exadata Cloud@Customer portfolio. This provides companies with a fully managed and automated Oracle database environment and platform.

The newly announced service Oracle Autonomous Database on Exadata Cloud@Customer enables companies to house and run existing databases and other applications in their own on-premise data center, without having to make any changes to the applications. Also, the used data never leaves the own data centre.

According to Oracle, this provides opportunities especially for those companies that find it difficult to transfer their business-critical database workloads to the public cloud environments from the perspective of data privacy, regulations, security requirements or performance. Or because their on-premise applications and databases are highly intertwined.

Completely automated and managed environment

Oracle Autonomous Database on Exadata Cloud@Customer enables organisations to switch to a fully automated and Oracle-managed environment. This includes fully automated database provisioning, tuning, clustering, disaster protection, flexible scaling, security and patching. According to Oracle, this eliminates manual processes and human errors. It also reduces costs while increasing performance, security and availability. The serverless architecture automatically scales to accommodate changing workloads and offers true pay-per-use.

Consolidation of databases

Specifically, with Oracle Autonomous Database on Exadata Cloud@Customer, customers can consolidate thousands of databases and run the converged, open Oracle Database for multiple data types and workloads. For example machine learning, JSON, Graph, spatial, IoT and In-Memory. This eliminates the need to implement fragmented databases for specific purposes.

In addition, companies can now work with databases seven times larger and achieve better database consolidation for their on-premise cloud database services. Think of up to twelve times more SQL IOPS, ten times more SQL throughput and up to 98 percent lower SQL latency than with RDS on AWS Outposts. Oracle Autonomous Database on Exadata Cloud@Customer further reduces almost the entire infrastructure and database management of customers. As a result, they only need to concentrate on the schedules and data in their databases and not on running the underlying database infrastructure.

Other product improvements

Besides the introduction of Oracle Autonomous Database on Exadata Cloud@Customer, Oracle has also implemented improvements for Autonomous Database and Exadata Cloud@Customer. For example, Autonomous Database is now certified for the Oracle services Siebel, Peoplesoft and JD Edwards.

The improvements to the Oracle Exadata platform primarily include the Oracle Exadata Database Machine X8M Technology which combines Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory and 100 Gigabit External Direct Memory Access (RDMA) over Converged Ethernet (RoCE) to remove storage bottlenecks and improve performance for the most demanding workloads. In addition, the Exadata platform now offers multiple VM clusters per Exadata rack and PCI-DSS certification.

Autonomous Database is available in customer data centers: standalone or as part of Oracle Dedicated Region Cloud@Customer, the industry’s first on-premise cloud region.
