VDI users also get improved Microsoft Teams experience

Mircosoft has introduced its new Teams app for Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) environments. VDI users will get the same experience of the previously revamped MS Teams app for Windows and Mac as well as some functionality of its own.

After Microsoft introduced its revamped Teams app for Windows and Mac users in October this year, Microsoft VDI customers are finally getting their turn.

With the new Teams app for VDI environments, this version gets the same capabilities that users have gotten through the other systems. All the underlying capabilities of the “classic” Teams app have been brought to VDI environments, and the new app also offers better performance, reliability and security.

Specific VDI features

In addition to these features, the new Teams for VDI users also offers some features implemented specifically for this environment. This is often based on feedback from end users who responded to a public preview.

In all facets, the app is faster than the older version, such as when launching the application upon joining meetings and takes up less disk storage space than the classic version.

Switching between chats, channels and activities is also instantaneous, without having to wait for content to load. This offers a good experience in VDI environments, according to Microsoft. Also, only one installer needs to be used for both a VDI and desktop installation, and there is the option in VDI for automatic up-dating.

More options for administrators

Administrators can also use the new app to use Microsoft Intune, which is used to deploy applications and updates via “silent” installations. The reliability and efficiency of Teams installations has also been improved, including reduced network bandwidth and disk storage space and reduced “idle” memory consumption.

The MSIX packaging format ensures that the VDI Teams app has the same Windows security features, including security updates and fixes. Furthermore, the new Teams version for VDI environments is compatible with MSIX App Attach, making it easier to distribute the application via Azure.
