The names of chat applications Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet will be known as Google Chat and Google Meet, as of today. There was no official announcement of the name change, but in a blog post, Google has started using the new names.
Changing program names to be more in line with the vendor is nothing new. Microsoft recently announced that Office 365 will eventually get the name Microsoft 365; now it’s Google‘s turn. In the Play Store the app is still advertised as Hangouts Meet, on G Suite’s own site the new name is already being used.
Google saw the use of its chat services increase significantly in recent months, after many people had to work from home due to the outbreak of the corona virus. In the same blog post that uses the name Google Meets, the tech giant also goes through a number of new measures that it has rolled out in new updates.
Only the creators of a meeting can mute other users, in order to prevent e.g. students from being able to kick a teacher from a meeting. Also, only the creator of a meeting can give permission to add a user to a call.
