Commvault introduces Threat Scan and Data Posture 360 for Microsoft 365. These tools enable organizations to scan backups for malware and ransomware, identify sensitive data, and find clean recovery points.
Microsoft 365 has more than 450 million paid business users worldwide, making emails, attachments, and shared files a prime target for attackers. Commvault aims to address this with two new extensions to Commvault Backup & Recovery for Microsoft 365. One feature focuses on detection, while the other focuses on visibility.
Threat Scan scans protected data from Exchange, OneDrive, SharePoint, and Teams for malware, ransomware, encryption activity, data anomalies, and other indicators of compromise. Data Posture 360, formerly known as Risk Analysis, shows where sensitive information, such as personally identifiable information (PII) and intellectual property, is located. It also highlights exposure risks, enabling teams to prioritize their response.
According to Pranay Ahlawat, Chief Technology and AI Officer at Commvault, the company is bringing “three key elements to the resilience equation with Microsoft 365: detection, visibility, and clean recoveries.”
Rescan old backups
Threat Scan doesn’t just look at new data. Commvault also applies up-to-date threat intelligence to historical backups stored in immutable storage. This can uncover threats that were unknown when the data was originally stored. These scans use indicators to isolate compromised content and identify reliable recovery points. This should reduce reinfection risk and speed recovery.
Customer Spokane Industries is already using the feature. “During a cyber incident, knowing what data can be safely restored is just as important as having a backup,” says IT Manager Matt Pancheri.
Threat Scan and Data Posture 360 will be paid add-ons. Customers can purchase them separately. The early access preview will begin in a few weeks, with general availability scheduled for early 2027.
