Backup specialist Veritas released a major update, version 8.3, for its NetBackup solution. This update provides customers with multiple data protection capabilities for all their IT environments: on-premise, hybrid and multicloud.
With the update, Veritas lays the foundation for a universal data management platform. With NetBackup, customers get a single platform covering all their IT environments. The NetBackup or Enterprise Data Services Platform (EDSP) platform is a combination of Veritas backup software with the Veritas Resiliency Platform (VRP) and CloudPoint.
Functionality
In version 8.3, NetBackup offers enhanced ransomware protection, 2048-bit encryption and integration with third-party key management systems (EKMS), improvements for role-based access control (RBAC) and detailed recovery of virtual machines with near-zero RPO through Continuous Data Protection (CDP).
Other added features include instant access to SQL databases, more workload capabilities such as MS SQL self-service, Media Server Deduplication Node (MSDP), support for object storage and cloud snapshots.
Cloud-native data protection
In addition, Veritas has added cloud-native data protection functionality for AWS, Azure and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Also, cloud-to-anywhere portability has been extended by adding Azure Stack and Azure region-to-region.
Furthermore, version 8.3 has a better optimization for storage costs. The time for discovery has also been significantly reduced. For example, the search time for VMware vCenter and VMware vCloud is now 50 times faster. The NAS data protection has become 25 percent faster due to auto-discovery of sources and load balancing. This offers the possibility to restore data anywhere on a NetBackup target. This should avoid vendor lock-in, according to Veritas.
