Crate.io unveiled a special database for information generated by the Internet of Things (IoT) devices, to the network edge. The new offering is called CrateDB Edge and launched for early adopters. It makes it possible for customers to get data and analyze it at its source, wherever that may be.

An analysis is possible even when internet connectivity is unavailable or not strong enough.

Crate.io launched its CrateDB database back in 2016. CrateDB is a structured Query Language database that runs on a cluster of containers, not unlike modern containerized apps made up of many components.

Bringing the main features to the edge

The CrateDB database is unique among SQL databases since it can redistribute data as it changes the size of clusters it is built on.

The company says that this is what makes it ideal for capturing and analyzing data generated by machines and devices that run on container management platforms like Kubernetes. The products sold by the company include the fully managed CrateDB (called CrateDB Cloud), which can be hosted on cloud platforms like Azure, Google Cloud, or Amazon Web Services.

CrateDB Edge is designed to bring the fully managed features of CrateDB Cloud to the edge.

What can you do with this offering?

The company stressed that the CrateDB Edge is great for companies that have strict data security specifications. Customers can choose to deploy a CrateDB Edge cluster on-premises in their own regions and operate it in their own infrastructure.

They can do this on-premises, AWS, or Azure. The CrateDB Edge clusters are hosted on Kubernetes and can be accessed any time using the CrateDB Cloud web interface so that users have complete ownership of their data.

Crate.io is inviting new and existing customers to participate in the early-adopter program.
