Global sales of PCs and laptops will be on the rise again by 2024. This is the finding of Canalys market researchers in a recent report. Next year, 267 million units are expected to cross the counter.

According to Canalys market researchers, global sales of PCs and laptops are slowly growing again after several difficult years. In the fourth and final quarter of 2023, which we are in now, PC and laptop sales will grow by 5 percent. This is mainly due to strong sales during the holiday season and improvements in the global economy.

De mondiale pc-markt zal weer gaan groeien.

However, market experts indicate the real growth will take place in 2024. Global PC and laptop sales will grow eight percent next year compared to this year and should reach a total of 276 million devices sold.

Refresh cycle for Windows devices

One reason for the expected rebound in the PC and laptop market is an expected new refresh cycle for Windows-based PCs and laptops. Sales in this particular market segment will increase by ten percent by 2024, according to Canalys.

In this regard, the specialists see an upturn, especially in the consumer segment where end users previously postponed their new PC or laptop purchases for an extended period of time.

Introduction of Qualcomm’s X Elite processor

Sales of ARM technology-based PCs and laptops, such as Apple’s Mac devices, are also likely to get another boost in 2024. The introduction of Qualcomm’s X Elite processor is a possible driver of this. Among other things, this processor brings better battery functionality for this type of PC and laptop.

Coming of AI PCs

Another important driver, according to market specialists, is the arrival of AI PCs, mainly in the B2B market. By 2024, these types of PCs and laptops will account for about 19 percent of total devices sold. Canalys said both Apple’s M-series Mac products and specific PCs within the Windows ecosystem will benefit.

In addition, the researchers predict that as there are more use cases for AI, AI functionality will become a feature of PCs and laptops that consumers expect by default. This means that manufacturers will, therefore, scale up the development and adoption of AI PCs and laptops more quickly.
