Python will remain the most popular programming language in 2024. However, SQL does appear to be catching up with it within companies.
SQL is gaining ground in business use. The standard language for database management is even overtaking Python, according to an annual study by IEEE. Python, by the way, remains the most popular language, both among companies and in education.
IEEE compares the popularity of different programming languages using three scales. ‘Spectrum’ examines the use of a language among an average IEEE member, ‘Trending’ looks for the language that best fits today’s living world and its needs, and ‘Jobs’ examines what programming knowledge organizations are looking for.
Unique strengths
Python fits well with businesses’ current needs. Programming languages are important for the development of AI. Python is user-friendly and can both get a novice developer started and help an experienced programmer develop prototypes quickly. In addition, it is praised for its extensive library collection that contains many components designed for AI and machine learning.
SQL, in turn, scores best on the “Jobs” spectrum. In job descriptors, knowledge of SQL is often referred to as essential. However, the ideal job candidate has even more to offer and knows a second programming language besides SQL. By the way, Python remains a highly sought-after skill that companies seek.
