Cloudflare Basin brings serverless data analysis to developers

Cloudflare is launching Basin, a data platform built on Apache Iceberg and R2 object storage. Developers can use it to collect, store, catalog, and query analytical data without dedicated servers. It eliminates data transfer costs between clouds.

With Basin, Cloudflare is targeting teams that want to work with their own data but lack the budget or personnel for a full-fledged data engineering department. According to the company, a modern data stack typically requires dedicated servers configured in advance for peak loads, separate systems for collecting and analyzing data, and incurs costs whenever data moves between clouds.

Basin simplifies this process. Cloudflare’s global network runs data collection, organization, and analysis on demand. There’s no need to manage clusters. And anyone querying the data using tools from other clouds, platforms, or regions pays no transfer fees.

“Developers shouldn’t need to become data infrastructure operators just to answer questions from their own data,” says Dane Knecht, CTO of Cloudflare. According to him, the company is now bringing the serverless model that developers already know from Cloudflare to analytics.

Data in Basin is stored in Apache Iceberg, an open table format. Any compatible tool can read that data directly, without copying or converting it. Cloudflare explicitly presents this as protection against vendor lock-in.

First customers

Anomaly, creator of the open-source AI coding agent OpenCode, has already migrated its entire data pipeline to Basin. “We replaced a complex AWS S3 and Athena setup with a cleaner, serverless architecture that reliably handles all of our event data,” says co-founder Dax Raad.

Bobsled is also using the platform. That company helps data teams distribute AI-ready data to partners, suppliers, and customers. According to Head of Platform Julien Grobbelaar, thanks to Basin, Bobsled can offer data products in every region of the major data and AI platforms at a fraction of the cost because there are no egress fees.

Cloudflare Basin is generally available starting today.
