OutSystems launches a preview of Project Neo. The new platform promises a low-code foundation for application development, containerization with Kubernetes and large-scale deployments in the cloud.

The world’s largest applications are developed with multiple systems and programming languages. Currently, OutSystems is known for a low-code platform that offers developers the ability to string together the building blocks of an application via virtual interfaces. OutSystems calls this AI-augmented development, which delivers productivity gains, and the ability to “build serious applications fast, right and for the future”.

Once developed, OutSystems supports application deployment. DevOps tools vary, but support for containerization — whereby applications are packaged to run in any cloud environment and on any operating system — is limited. The organization argues that the latter is reserved for advanced users with knowledge of relevant solutions, architectures and networking requirements. The introduction of a new platform promises to change that.

New: Project Neo

The public preview of OutSystems’ new platform, codenamed ‘Project Neo’, was made available today. The platform is separate from OutSystems’ current solution and focuses on the development and deployment of containerized apps with Kubernetes.

With this, the organization claims to provide a basis for the migration of legacy apps (e.g. on-premises or outdated cloud applications, ed.) to modern cloud environments. However, as it stands, that basis is not there yet. The functionality of the preview is limited. A full-fledged release will appear sometime in 2022. The organization states that, from then on, any company will be able to build custom cloud applications that can be developed and changed on a global scale.
