Meta has acquired Conductor, a startup that enables multiple AI agents to work on software projects simultaneously. Conductor’s cloud service, which launched just this summer, will shut down on November 20.
Meta confirmed the acquisition of Conductor to TechCrunch but declined to comment further on the deal. After Axios broke the news, Conductor confirmed it on its own blog.
Conductor was founded in 2024 and launched its own solution this summer. Conductor’s platform deploys teams of agents, each working on a specific part of a project. This can be done in the cloud, locally, or even via the user’s phone. The agents used by Conductor run on external models from companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
Founder and CEO Charlie Holtz is looking ahead. “We have big, crazy plans for the next interface,” he wrote. Customers should be able to use something new early next year, but the cloud service will already be shutting down on November 20.
Start of integration
Otherwise, Conductor’s core features will continue to work as before. However, the company will begin deleting users’ cloud data after November 20, so anyone with projects stored there has two weeks left to back up their data.
Founder Holtz himself is joining Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). On X, he wrote that he is looking forward to collaborating with Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang and Nat Friedman, Head of Product at MSL. According to Holtz, MSL has “the highest talent density of any lab.” Meta had previously poached dozens of researchers from competitors, offering compensation packages reportedly worth up to $100 million. That practice eventually had to stop because it was too costly, especially with major infrastructure investments also on the horizon.
Catching up with Muse
Meta lagged behind in the AI field for a long time after making a big splash with its open-weight Llama models in 2023 and 2024. With the Muse models, available since this year, the company is trying to close that gap. Muse Spark heralded a new AI strategy, and starting with version 1.1, the gap with Anthropic and OpenAI began to narrow. Muse Code, Meta’s own coding agent, followed in August. The Muse agents now have more than 10 million users.
Conductor isn’t the first AI-related acquisition in the past year for Mark Zuckerberg’s company. Meta previously acquired Moltbook, the viral social network for AI agents.
