Nvidia is in talks about a possible investment of up to $30 billion in OpenAI. The negotiations are part of a new financing round that could value the AI developer at around $730 billion before new investments. This would make it one of the largest private capital rounds ever in the technology sector.
This is according to CNBC. According to insiders, this potential investment is separate from the previously announced collaboration between Nvidia and OpenAI in the field of infrastructure. In September, both parties announced that they would be collaborating on a large-scale project reportedly worth $100 billion, focused on the construction and deployment of new supercomputing capacity. The $30 billion currently under discussion would not be linked to specific milestones or the delivery of infrastructure, but would constitute an independent financial participation.
The earlier infrastructure agreements provided for a phased investment by Nvidia, spread over several years and linked to the launch of new data centers and computing clusters. The possible new capital injection follows a different path, although sources do not rule out that Nvidia may still invest within the original framework of that infrastructure deal in the future.
The talks are still at an early stage and no final agreement has been reached. Details are therefore still subject to change. Nvidia has declined to comment on the reports.
Previous doubts about investments by Nvidia
In recent months, there has been speculation in the market about the status of the large-scale infrastructure collaboration, partly after US media reported that this project had been temporarily halted. Nvidia previously indicated in financial reports that there is no certainty that such talks will actually lead to binding agreements.
OpenAI has attempted to calm the unrest surrounding the collaboration. The company recently emphasized that its relationship with Nvidia is good and that there are no fundamental problems. Earlier this month, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang (photo) also expressed optimism about future participation in the next round of investment in OpenAI.
In addition to Nvidia, OpenAI is also talking to other parties about participating in the financing. The total capital round could amount to approximately $100 billion. A phased approach is being considered, with strategic partners such as large technology companies entering first, followed by a broader group of investors. Negotiations have gained momentum in recent weeks, but a conclusion is still pending.
