Google Cloud’s London region (europe-west2) is currently experiencing an outage. This is causing issues for several services, including the global operations of Revolut.
According to Google’s status page, the outage has been ongoing since 10:35 a.m. The issues are limited to europe-west2, the region with data centers in London. Google Cloud Services locations are not affected; Google recommends moving workloads to another region. However, this does not appear to apply to every service. The company has not yet identified a cause, and it is unclear when the issues will be resolved.
Google says it is still investigating the incident. According to The Register, services affected include Compute Engine, Cloud SQL, BigQuery, Cloud Run, Kubernetes Engine, and Cloud Storage.
Revolut is down
The consequences of the outage appear to be most urgent for Revolut. The bank’s customers are unable to make payments, and the app does not always function properly. According to Reuters, users are also unable to log in or withdraw money from ATMs, although based on personal experience, this is not always the case. In any event, a source within Revolut confirmed to the news agency that the issues are related to the Google Cloud outage. Officially, the bank has not yet confirmed that connection. However, Revolut states that customer funds and data are secure.
British companies also affected
Revolut is the most prominent example of an affected party, but on Downdetector, the number of outage reports for British services such as the Royal Mail and DPD is rising.
