HPE and Qualcomm expand their collaboration to deliver virtualized and Open RAN-based 5G solutions. The organizations announced the new Qualcomm X100 5G RAN accelerator card and HPE ProLiant server.

The Qualcomm X100 5G RAN accelerator card should provide better cloud-based, virtualized and energy-efficient 5G solutions for telecom operators. Especially for supporting high capacity and low latency for workloads using 5G connectivity.

Qualcomm 5G DU X100 Accelerator Card

The accelerator card forms the basis of a series of new 5G hardware and software that the tech giants plan to jointly release in the coming years.

The first solution is a fully optimized and virtualized vDU. This solution takes care of both the baseband processing and the various required (radio) functionality in 5G trajectories.

The solution is equipped with Qualcomm’s 5G DU X100 Accelerator Card to support 5G frequencies in the sub-6GHz spectrum and mmWave spectrum. This facilitates 5G deployments based on Open RAN technology. Among other things, the accelerator card offloads computational power-hungry 5G baseband processing from the host CPU.

Dedicated HPE ProLiant DL110 Server Rack

Additionally, the organizations released the HPE ProLiant DL110 Gen10 Plus Telco Server. The server is based on a third-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processor with up to 1 TB memory. The server supports up to four accelerator cards. These cards ensure low power consumption, support for 5G mid-band and large-scale MIMO deployments.

Furthermore, the server consists of a 1U rack explicitly designed for telecom applications. Thus, the rack is suitable for edge computing applications.
