Citrix virtualization products and Sophos security services ran into problems on Feb. 29.

The extra day in a leap year can cause problems in computer systems if they are not programmed to count the extra day. This seems to be the case with Citrix software; users complained on the support forum that the Citrix HDX HTML5 Video Redirection Service stopped working on all VDA machines. This service supports the user experience when streaming video content on a virtual desktop.

Several environments stopped booting during Feb. 29. “After nightly reboot the Citrix HDX HTML5 Video Redirection Service won’t start. The Citrix HDX HTML5 Video Redirection Service service terminated unexpectedly,” said a user on the forum. Four years ago, Citrix users also ran into the leap day bug when there was also a leap day.

The solution for Citrix systems was to change the system time to, say, Feb. 28, which is not always easy in practice because some companies manage many servers.

Sophos

Sophos Endpoint, Sophos Server and Sophos Home also suffered from the leap day bug. Users may have run into unexpected security certification warnings on HTTPS websites after rebooting on Feb. 29. This warning appears only if “SSL/TLS decryption of HTTPS websites” is set in the antivirus software, which is used to decrypt secure Web connections. This setting is disabled by default for all users.
