Companies and developers are becoming increasingly concerned about API security.

Research by Noname Security shows that API usage doubled in the last few months. On average, the surveyed companies used 15,564 different APIs.

Concerns about security

The explosive growth leads to concerns among companies and developers. Almost half of those surveyed dealt with an API security incident in the past year. In 63 percent of these cases, the incident led to a data breach or loss.

Many security incidents are caused by authentication problems, misconfigurations, unnecessary data exposure, lack of monitoring and limited API testing options.

Though companies often have API authentication policies in place, about a third say they have little confidence in the policies used.

Impact on production processes

API security concerns affect production processes. One-third of the respondents stated that projects were delayed because of uncertainty related to API security. According to a large majority of respondents, production delays would have been prevented by integrating API security testing (AST) into development pipelines.

The researchers indicate that the growing dependency on APIs reveals many vulnerabilities. Noname Security urges organizations to pay more attention to API security.
