Users with free accounts for Google’s G Suite domain service will soon have to start paying. Google may force G Suite accounts made between 2006 and 2012 to switch to a paid subscription for Google Workspace starting in May of this year.

Between 2006 and 2012, Google allowed users to register custom mail domain names for free. Think of any extension other than ‘example@gmail.com‘. Although the free service has been unavailable since 2012, nothing changed for users that registered between 2006 and 2012 — until now.

Google has decided to force users with legacy G Suite accounts to upgrade to a paid subscription for Google Workspace starting in May 2022. The tech giant has informed affected users that they must choose a suitable subscription by May 1. If they do not do so, their account will be suspended. After sixty days, users will be barred from accessing services such as Gmail and Calendar.

Paid subscriptions and exit options

Users can review their G Suite account version via the billing section in admin.google.com. Customers who don’t want to upgrade to a paid subscription can export and retain some of their data through Google Takeout. Purchased media and apps linked to the accounts can not be exported. Linked services such as Google Voice could be lost upon failing to buy a license in time.
