Oppo has been active in the smartphone market for a while now, but for a long time, it operated just underneath the top of the market. This year, the Chinese telecom giant is changing things for the better with the Find X2 series. Techzine discovered in this review that the Oppo Find X2 Pro proves that Oppo is ready to play with the big boys.

The Oppo Find X2 Pro comes with everything we expect from a high-end smartphone these days. It supports 5G, contains the best chipset you can get in a smartphone right now and has an extensive camera system. The Find X2 Pro’s 6.7-inch AMOLED display has a high 120Hz refresh rate and quad HD+ resolution. Fast charging is possible at 65 watts, and the case of the Oppo Find X2 Pro is entirely waterproof and made of high-quality materials. The associated price tag of 949 euros is steep, but the Find X2 Pro has everything it takes to justify that price point. This review will show you what that looks like.

Remarkable materials

The design of the Oppo Find X2 Pro is not that special. It features a large curved display with minimal edges and a small notch for the selfie camera, a metal edge and the back features a fairly large camera area. The smartphone is IP68 water-resistant and includes a fingerprint scanner in the screen that works well. It is also possible to use facial recognition, although this only works with the selfie camera and is therefore not as secure.

What makes the design of the Oppo Find X2 Pro unique is the material on the back. You can choose between a black version with a ceramic back, or an orange version with a leather back. We tested the black Find X2 Pro, and we can conclude that the material is more comfortable than the standard glass of other high-end smartphones. The ceramic material is very similar to glass, but because Oppo embossed it with a subtle relief, it’s more comfortable to use and hold. The ceramic material also scratches less easily.

Despite the small screen edges, Oppo incorporated stereo speakers in the Find X2 Pro that sound pretty good. Unfortunately, the smartphone lacks a traditional audio jack, but that’s something that applies to almost all high-end phones at the moment.

Display is crisp and fast

The Oppo Find X2 Pro has a 6.7-inch Quad HD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate. In itself, this is not very special; the Samsung Galaxy S20-series and the OnePlus 8 Pro, for example, have that as well. With Samsung’s high-end smartphones, however, it is not possible to use that high resolution and the high refresh rate simultaneously. Oppo is capable of doing this: the smartphone can effortlessly be set up to render images at full resolution and 120Hz. Although this is not a huge advantage, it does make the scrolling experience a bit smoother.

The image quality of the display is also excellent. Colours are realistic and vivid, and the colour range is extensive. The contrast is almost infinite as it should be on an AMOLED display, and the brightness is also more than sufficient. Even in the bright summer sun, the screen is still readable, which makes answering an email from your balcony no problem at all.

The only small drawback of the Find X2 Pro’s display is that the edges are strongly curved. This gives it a modern look and visually makes the screen edges appear smaller, but ergonomically it is not always practical. Selecting text at the side of the screen, for example, does not always work very well.

Performs as it should

We can be brief about the performance of the Oppo Find X2 Pro: it is excellent. Exactly the way it should be in a 2020 smartphone. The smartphone is based on Qualcomm’s modern Snapdragon 865 platform and includes 12GB of working memory and 512GB of storage space. Although it’s a bit overkill, it ensures that even the most hardcore multi-tasker will have no problem using this smartphone.

The 4260mAh battery capacity is not particularly large, but the Find X2 Pro is energy efficient and will make it through the day even with more intensive use. Furthermore, it charges at record speed: the 65-watt charge ensures that the battery is fully charged in just under 40 minutes.

The downside of that story is that the Find X2 Pro does not support wireless charging. Apparently, Oppo didn’t think that was necessary in addition to the fast wired charging function. Too bad, because it means that recharging the smartphone at your desk during the day becomes a lot more cumbersome.

Excellent software

Oppo wasn’t exactly known for its excellent software in recent years. With the Find X2 series, Oppo is changing gears dramatically when it comes to software. The new Color OS 7.1 skin on the smartphone is based on Android 10 and works rather well. Graphically, it feels more crowded than the streamlined skins of brands like OnePlus or Sony, but the interface is cleverly put together, and Oppo has packed the device full of extras.

In addition, the Find X2 Pro is the first Oppo smartphone to be included in the Android Enterprise Recommended. This means that the smartphone will receive at least three years of security updates and supports zero-touch enrollment for IT administrators. For some companies, this is mandatory even within a BYOD program. This is a significant business advantage.

Premium cameras

The back of the Oppo Find X2 Pro features three excellent cameras. The smartphone has a 48-megapixel main camera, a 48-megapixel wide-angle camera and a 13-megapixel camera with 5x zoom using a periscope system. Together, this is one of the better camera systems of the moment, not only theoretically but also in reality.

The wide-angle and main cameras use pixel binning to convert the 48-megapixel photos into detailed 12-megapixel photos. Find X2 Pro’s image processing algorithms produce beautiful and natural colours. The smartphone maintains a delicate balance between too much sharpening in the photos and no sharpening at all, which makes the end result appear natural and detailed. The Find X2 Pro also produces beautiful results in the evening. The night mode is not as good as, for example, the Huawei P40 Pro, but still manages to achieve impressive results.

Different zoom levels with the Oppo Find X2 Pro.

There’s also the zoom camera. From a technical point of view, this periscope system that allows 5x optical zoom is impressive, and the zoomed-in photos you take with the Oppo Find X2 Pro are beautiful. Nonetheless, we have our doubts about the practicality of the zoom camera. It is a nice addition that comes in handy in some cases, but we would use a decent camera with 2x zoom or 3x zoom more often.

Overall, the camera of the Oppo Find X2 Pro comes close to the level of the absolute high-end smartphones on the market. The same applies to the video camera, which effortlessly shoots 4K videos in 60 frames per second. Those videos are stable and rich in detail and have beautiful colours. They are only slightly inferior to the best video features on the market at the moment.

The front camera of the Find X2 Pro has a resolution of 32 megapixels and is sufficient, but does not match the level of the other cameras. It appears that Oppo mainly focused on the high resolution and that other more important things like colour reproduction and sharpness ended up in second place. On top of that, photos taken with the front camera appear to have been moved quite easily. Fortunately, the quality of the front camera is more than sufficient for crisp and proper video meetings.

Conclusion

With the Oppo Find X2 Pro, Oppo is for the first time delivering a smartphone that really performs at the absolute highest level. On paper, the phone has everything you would expect in the year 2020, and the phone doesn’t leave a lot to be desired in reality. The software has pleasantly surprised us, the performance of the Oppo Find X2 Pro is excellent, and the phone can recharge at lightning speed. The screen is possibly the best screen you can find in a smartphone at the moment and the camera scores at a top-level.

The Oppo Find X2 Pro only has two minor flaws: it cannot be charged wirelessly, and the 5x zoom camera is not very useful in real life. If Oppo had replaced the camera with a reliable 3x zoom camera, the camera system on paper would have been less impressive, but it would’ve been more practical.

Nevertheless, Oppo has done an outstanding job with the Find X2 Pro, and the smartphone is worth its high price tag of 949 euros.
