Vimeo is introducing artificial intelligence to its video capabilities. The new AI tools will reduce the time it takes to produce and edit a video.

This week Vimeo announced the launch of an AI-powered video creation suite that it characterizes as the first of its kind. The company claims its new AI tools enable users to record videos in one take and edit in seconds. The suite can generate a script from a text prompt, record the user’s screen using a built-in teleprompter, and “instantly delete any unwanted content such as filler words (ums and uhs) and long pauses”, according to Vimeo. In other words, it applies the typical capabilities we see in generative AI implementations to the video format.

Helping everyone to create high quality videos

Vimeo says that its research shows that 80 per cent of people prefer videos over written text. However: it claims that most people are uncomfortable creating videos themselves, and lack the skills, time, or resources to create and edit videos effectively.

With the launch of these new AI-powered features, the company hopes to eliminate these barriers by “generating a polished script in seconds”. Users can also “be more natural in front of the camera”, Vimeo claims, thanks to a with a customizable teleprompter, and the ability to remove any unwanted moments from their videos in just a few clicks.

Here’s what’s in the AI toolbox

The new suite of tools is comprised of three main features. First, an AI-powered script generator can create a video script in seconds using generative AI. Users only need to type a brief text description and select their preferred tone and video length.

The second component is the aforementioned teleprompter. This helps the user to “stay on script”. At the same time, it focuses on maintaining natural eye contact with the webcam using Vimeo’s built-in display. The teleprompter can be personalized regarding font size and pace while recording.

The third element is a text-based video editor that can automatically delete filler words, long pauses, and awkward moments, “with a single click”, according to Vimeo.

Ashraf Alkarmi, chief product officer at Vimeo, said the new tools were just the beginning. “We believe this launch will be a game-changer for how companies should be communicating and connecting with distributed teams and customers”, he said.

“We envision a future in which AI knowledge is a prerequisite, not a luxury, to video production.”
