The introduction of Google’s new AI chatbot Gemini will be delayed until January 2024. This writes The Information. Answers to non-English prompts would not yet meet quality standards.
According to The Information, Google initially planned to launch Gemini this week. This has now been postponed until the first month of next year. The decision to postpone the launch would come from Google CEO Sundar Pichai himself. Had the delay not been necessary, the launch events would have taken place in California, New York and Washington DC.
A possible cause of Google Gemini’s postponement is that the AI chatbot is not yet responding to prompts given in a language other than English in a satisfactory way. Global coverage, which requires more languages to be fully supported than just English, would be one of the key features of the tech giant’s latest chatbot.
Development of Gemini AI chatbot
Google has been developing its Gemini AI chatbot for some time. This chatbot, which specialists say is much more powerful than the current Google Bard and ChatGPT based on competitor OpenAI’s GPT-4 model, would have multiple multimodal functionalities never before featured in previous AI models.
The new AI chatbot would understand multiple types of data and inputs. In this way, it can generate responses based on text, images and other content. In the latter case, one example is that the chatbot can scrutinize entire websites.
In addition, the new Google AI chatbot would also be more friendly to developers. Google is also building an API for Gemini to integrate the AI chatbot into applications from other vendors.
More computing power on offer
The power of the new Google AI chatbot mainly comes from the large amount of computing power available to Gemini under the hood. Google can now use more high-end AI accelerators through its own Google Cloud platform. In a test, Gemini is said to have delivered better performance (expressed in FLOPS, or floating point operations per second) than competitor GPT-4.
Exactly when next year’s Google Gemini presentation will be held has not yet been announced.
