Microsoft quietly published a new document with instructions for Windows 10/11 users to permanently remove the online storage environment OneDrive from their PCs. This has been done recently, possibly to further comply with the EU’s recently enacted DMA regulations.

The now-published document details how Windows 10/11 users can unlink their OneDrive environment from their PCs and completely uninstall it whenever they want.

In the document, the tech company first tries to convince users that they can hide the feature on their PCs or stop syncing if they no longer want to use the online storage environment.

In the document, Microsoft also provides instructions on how users can permanently uninstall OneDrive from their PCs. This works for both Windows 10 and 11. This can be done through the Apps menu in settings, where they should click “Uninstall” at the relevant OneDrive app.

Microsoft indicates that users will not lose their saved files and can always recover these by logging into Onedrive.com.

Complying with DMA

Rumors suggest that the new document results from the EU’s new DMA regulations, which came into effect in early March. The company announced in November of last year that it would implement measures to comply with the DMA.

Microsoft has been busy lately with updates to its OneDrive environment. A more uncluttered version of the online storage environment is now being rolled out and it is no longer possible to upload files via a URL, among other things.
