According to Microsoft, few users rely on this feature, so the company has decided to stop offering it at the end of this month.

In 2021, OneDrive gained the ability to upload files using a URL. Here, the user shares a web link of the file location with OneDrive, after which the storage service starts downloading the file immediately.

As of March 29, uploading files this way will no longer be possible. However, files uploaded this way will remain on the platform unless the user deletes them.

Not in line with vision

Microsoft’s decision to discontinue the feature was based on its high cost of maintenance and low usage. According to Microsoft, withdrawing the feature also does not align with the OneDrive philosophy of being a cloud storage service that syncs files across devices. Indeed, users generally save files directly through their device in OneDrive, after which the files are stored in the cloud.

Microsoft advises users who use the URL upload option to switch to alternatives as soon as possible. “Options include uploads of small files, or for larger files please use upload sessions,” Microsoft said of the alternatives.
