Starting this spring, Apple allows developers of iPhone apps to offer their apps directly to users through their own websites. This development follows a previous announcement that developers could offer apps on the Apple platform through self-developed alternative app stores. To take advantage of the new options, however, developers must meet strict requirements.

Developers who agree to the alternative terms that Apple has had to create to comply with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) will soon be able to offer iPhone apps outside the official App Store through their own website.

Developers may also create their own promotional campaigns, discounts, and other special deals. According to a news article by Apple, the templates it has made available for such promotions are no longer mandatory.

This so-called Web Distribution will become available come springtime, Apple states on its website.

Apple has established strict rules to maintain some control over the apps that become available on the iOS platform in this way. Only developers who have participated in the Apple Developer Program for at least two consecutive years and are in good standing are eligible. Users must have also downloaded their apps more than one million times in the previous year.

In return, participating developers get access to security, backup and recovery options and can securely download apps from other participating companies (after they give permission). Apple also grants them access to the APIs that enable the sale of iOS apps through a third-party site.

Alternative app store

Developers who want to develop their own alternative to the official App Store are no longer required to include other developers’ apps. Each developer can thus create their own marketplace with only their own content.

Participating developers get one chance to run an alternative app store. Those who change their minds and want to get back under Apple’s wings will be given a “one-time option” to cancel the alternative terms they previously agreed to.
